The message came after a tense two-hour standoff between the West Bengal and protesting doctors in Kolkata.

A delegation of junior doctors – who have struck work now for over a month over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar hospital – had reached the state secretariat for talks with the chief minister, but sat outside the auditorium for two hours because the government didn’t agree to their demand of live-streaming the negotiations.

Following this, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee indicated that the protesters were politically motivated and wanted her chair. She said that she was willing to resign for the sake of justice.

The Mamata Banerjee-led government has faced flak for its handling of the case, with accusations of tampering with evidence, bribery and more from the opposition and the victim's parents.

Holding a press conference, members of 'Desh Bachao Gano Manch' (Save the Country platform) quoted the state health department figure that claimed 27 people have so far died for alleged lack of treatment at state hospitals during the agitation of the medics.

Family members of several deceased persons were present at the press meet.

Kolkata rape-murder case live: IMA delegation meets cabinet secretary over need for central act on violence against medics

Kolkata rape-murder case live: A delegation of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday met with Union Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan and apprised him of the importance of bringing a central Act to check violence on medical professionals at their workplace.

IMA national president Dr R V Asokan and national vice-president Dr Shivkumar Utture met with Somanathan at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan.

The cabinet secretary presides over the National Task Force which is tasked to formulate a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Both Asokan and Utture also attended a subgroup meeting of the National Task Force at the Nirman Bhavan, according to an internal communication of the IMA.

The IMA is learnt to have put forward its recommendations for improving the working conditions of healthcare professionals.

Liaison teams are meeting various members of the National Task Force.

Kolkata rape-murder case live: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh on Friday claimed that some opposition political forces have hatched a conspiracy to attack the protesting junior doctors to defame the Mamata Banerjee government and the ruling party of West Bengal.

The medics’ sit-in outside Swasthya Bhavan, the state’s health department headquarters, entered the fourth day on Friday. They are demanding removal of top officials of the department.

In a press conference, Ghosh, a former Rajya Sabha MP, played a purported audio clip in which two persons are heard planning to "attack the junior doctors on their return from (state secretariat) Nabanna on September 12 night".

Kolkata rape-murder case live: An artist from Mumbai has created a Ganesh idol in the ‘Ardhanari’ form – half male, half female – to highlight the need for harmony between the two genders amid rising crimes against women.

Rintu Rathod has sculpted an idol of the elephant-headed deity from chocolate, something she specialises in.

Rathod said she used 20 kg of dark chocolate and 10 kg of white chocolate to create the 25-inch-tall idol in the ‘Ardhanari’ form, installed at her Santacruz home.

“This form of Ganapati is particularly significant in Hinduism. It emphasises the idea that male and female principles are essential and complementary to each other, promoting harmony and balance in the universe,” she said.

An ‘Ardhanari’ idol of a 12-armed Ganesha is installed in an 800-year-old temple in Goregaon in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, said Rathod.

Kolkata rape-murder case live: The CBI plans to conduct a narco analysis test on Sanjay Roy, arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, an officer said Friday. The agency has approached Sealdah court for permission to carry out the test.

"This is to verify if Roy is telling the truth. The narco analysis will help cross-check his statements," the officer told PTI.

The hearing on the CBI’s request is expected later today. A polygraph test has already been conducted on Roy at the Presidency Correctional Home.

"How long will the RG Kar victim's family have to wait for justice?" the TMC leader asked. He noted that the Supreme Court is monitoring the case and criticized the CBI for not filing the charge sheet despite having the accused and evidence.
